Is Restylane Better Than Juvederm

1. Molecular Properties of Hyaluronic Acid

Restylane Hyaluronic Acid utilizes patented NASHA technology. The hyaluronic acid production process involves first using bacterially fermented and cross-linked hyaluronic acid, then passing it through sieves of varying sizes to produce gel particles of specific sizes and shapes. Therefore, the most distinctive feature of Restylane Hyaluronic Acid is its granular form, with the molecular size gradually increasing from Restylane Type 1 to Restylane Type 4.

Juvederm Hyaluronic Acid utilizes patented HYLACROSS technology. The production process involves first using bacterially fermented and cross-linked hyaluronic acid, then uniformly mixing gel particles of varying sizes and shapes to form a smooth, uniform gel.

Thus, the biggest difference between Restylane and Juvederm lies in the molecular form of the hyaluronic acid: Restylane's hyaluronic acid molecules are granular, while Juvederm's are in a gel state.

1. Sculpting Properties

Restylane wins!

Restylane 3 Perlane and Restylane 4 Sub-q, due to their larger molecular weight, are more effective when injected into areas requiring sculpting, such as the bridge of the nose, nasal root, and chin.

2. Spreadability

Juvederm wins!

Juvederm is a homogenous gel with better spreadability than Restylane, making it less likely to cause adverse reactions such as lumps and nodules after injection.

3. Softness

Juvederm wins!

Juvederm is a homogenous gel with a softer and more elastic feel.

4. Hyaluronic Acid Concentration

Juvederm wins!

Juvederm has a hyaluronic acid concentration of 24mg/ml, while Restylane has a concentration of 20mg/ml. For the same volume of hyaluronic acid, Juvederm contains 20% more cross-linked hyaluronic acid than Restylane. Each Juvederm ULTRA 0.8mL vial contains 8% more cross-linked hyaluronic acid than Restylane 1.0mL.

5. Post-Injection Duration

Juvederm wins!

Restylane 2 has a shelf life of 3-6 months; Restylane 3 Perlane has a shelf life of 9-12 months; and Restylane 4 Sub-Q has a shelf life of 12 months.

Juvederm Ultra 2, Juvederm Ultra 3, and Juvederm Ultra 4 have a shelf life of 12 months; and Juvederm Voluma has a shelf life of 18 months.
