Factors Affecting The Effectiveness of Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler

Hyaluronic acid is indeed a great product. It can be injected in various areas, showing significant improvement before and after treatment, is safe with no side effects, causes minimal discomfort and swelling, and noticeable results can be seen within fifteen minutes.

However, the only drawback is that it requires regular injections.  Many people who have received hyaluronic acid injections have this question: "Others' hyaluronic acid injections last for over a year, but mine only lasted 4-5 months. Was it a waste of money?"

Why do others' results last longer than yours? Why does your body absorb hyaluronic acid so quickly?

I. Factors Affecting the Longevity of Hyaluronic Acid

In fact, many factors affect how quickly hyaluronic acid is absorbed. With proper attention, you can maintain the effects for a longer time!

Factor 1: Different individual constitutions lead to different hyaluronic acid metabolism rates.

Individual differences, including body weight and age, can affect the metabolic rate of hyaluronic acid. Generally, thinner people metabolize hyaluronic acid faster. The metabolic rate of hyaluronic acid varies in different age groups and different parts of the body; the older you are, the lower the hyaluronic acid content in your skin and the faster the metabolism. To give a simple example, if two people drink the same amount of water, one person might get thirsty again very quickly after finishing the first glass, while the other might not feel thirsty for a long time.

Factor 2: The first hyaluronic acid injection is usually absorbed quickly.

Why is this? Because hyaluronic acid is like water in the skin. When it's injected into the skin for the first time, skin cells absorb the foreign substance very quickly, although good quality hyaluronic acid will last a little longer.

However, some people find that after a period of time after the injection, their skin becomes very hydrated. When they get a touch-up injection, the cells won't absorb it as quickly. This is because there's a limit to absorption, just like you can only drink so much water before you're full. Therefore, after several touch-up injections, the effects will last longer.

Factor 3: Poor personal habits can also accelerate hyaluronic acid absorption.

Some poor personal habits, such as frequent drinking and staying up late, can also accelerate the absorption of hyaluronic acid. Drinking alcohol accelerates blood circulation, causing hyaluronic acid to be lost more quickly. Staying up late leads to dehydration, which also causes the body to absorb hyaluronic acid more quickly.

Also, when the skin is dry and dehydrated, hyaluronic acid will be absorbed very quickly. Therefore, drinking plenty of water after the injection to replenish skin moisture will also slightly extend the duration of the effect.

Factor 4: Different hyaluronic acid products have different durations of effect.

Hyaluronic acid products are definitely a case of "you get what you pay for."  Good hyaluronic acid products, in addition to having advantages in manufacturing processes, also have a longer duration of effect. If you want the effect to last longer, a good hyaluronic acid product is definitely the best choice, not just a gimmick!

Because hyaluronic acid used as an injectable filler is generally extracted from various sources, including animal tissue extraction, microbial fermentation, and chemical synthesis.

Like the hyaluronic acid in our own tissues, the hyaluronic acid used as a filler will also be metabolized, but the time required for metabolism differs due to differences in raw materials and manufacturing techniques. Generally speaking, if you want the injected hyaluronic acid to stay in your skin for a longer time, you need to pay attention to two keywords: cross-linking degree & monophasic or biphasic.

What is cross-linking degree?

Simply put, non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid and hyaluronic acid with a low degree of cross-linking are metabolized very quickly.

The hyaluronic acid produced in the human body is non-cross-linked, because the body also produces hyaluronidase and free radicals. Therefore, half of the hyaluronic acid produced in the body is degraded by hyaluronidase within 1-2 days. To extend the degradation time of hyaluronic acid, people use "cross-linking agents" to combine some sites on the long hyaluronic acid chains, forming a three-dimensional structure, thus enhancing the resistance to enzymatic degradation.

Without considering other factors, the higher the degree of cross-linking, the stronger the resistance to degradation, and the longer the duration of effect.

What are monophasic and biphasic hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid on the market is mainly divided into two types: monophasic and biphasic, representing two different hyaluronic acid manufacturing processes.

▶ Biphasic hyaluronic acid

Biphasic hyaluronic acid is made by sieving large blocks of hyaluronic acid gel into small hyaluronic acid "hard blocks," and then mixing them with hyaluronic acid solution to create the hyaluronic acid product. Most hyaluronic acid products on the market are biphasic.

Suitable for smoothing fine lines, lip augmentation, and other superficial injections. ▶ Monophasic Hyaluronic Acid

Monophasic hyaluronic acid is made by grinding large hyaluronic acid gel blocks into a smooth, very fine gel texture using a grinding method, without adding any other ingredients.

It is suitable for areas that require clear contour lines, such as the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.

If you look at the two types of hyaluronic acid under a magnifying glass, biphasic hyaluronic acid has small particles, while monophasic hyaluronic acid is a smooth gel. Because monophasic hyaluronic acid is a single entity and its gel form is less likely to be broken down,

it usually lasts longer.

However, the key is to consider your budget and choose genuine hyaluronic acid within your affordable price range.

Factor 5: Different injection sites also affect the rate of hyaluronic acid absorption.

In actual treatment, it has been found that the injection site and corresponding facial expression activity also affect the duration of hyaluronic acid. For example, areas like the nose and chin, because they have no active muscles and low facial expression activity, the effect lasts relatively longer;

while areas such as the nasolabial folds, cheeks, and lips are areas with higher facial expression activity, and the hyaluronic acid will be absorbed faster.

II. Methods to Extend the Duration

What if these problems are unavoidable? After reading the above reasons, many people will say, "I know all this, but I can't control it!" I can't change my constitution, and drinking and staying up late are unavoidable, but I still want the effect to last longer the first time. Can I just inject more at once?

This is certainly not advisable. Injecting too much at once will make the injection site look unnatural and stiff, and may even cause side effects. It is recommended to inject small amounts multiple times, which not only helps to extend the duration but also maintains the aesthetic appearance.

For example, if a person's face (excluding the forehead and temples) requires 3-4 syringes of hyaluronic acid, the first injection should only be 1-2 syringes, and then a follow-up injection should be given within 1-3 months. The final duration will be longer than injecting 4 syringes of hyaluronic acid at once. In summary,

By choosing the appropriate hyaluronic acid product based on your financial situation and individual needs, adhering to the principle of "small amounts and frequent injections," and carefully following your doctor's advice regarding aftercare, you can effectively extend the duration of the effects. Choosing the right product and proper aftercare are crucial for achieving long-lasting results with hyaluronic acid.
