Types of Hyaluronic Acid


Hyaluronic acid is categorized into cross-linked and non-cross-linked types based on their cross-linking state:


Cross-linked hyaluronic acid: Hyaluronic acid with a small molecular weight, including hyaluronic acid, can be used to treat neck wrinkles. Its effect is shallow and short-lived, gradually absorbing over 3-6 months. Some specialized cross-linked hyaluronic acids can last up to 2-3 years and can be injected deeper. They are primarily used for contouring, including temple and forehead augmentation, as well as rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. For Example: Juvederm , restylane, Revolax, Neuramis, Dermalax and so on. 


Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid: It is used in many departments, including ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and cosmetic surgery. It is often used in cosmetic surgery for hydration and moisturizing. Hyaluronic acid is also found in some cosmetics, providing hydration and moisturizing benefits,such as Nctf 135ha, Cytocare 715,  Cytocare 640, restylane skinbooster and so on.



Hyaluronic acid is categorized by molecular size into small, medium, and large molecules.


1. Small molecule hyaluronic acid has a watery texture and is primarily used for injection into the dermis of the face. It penetrates deeply into the dermis, helping to replenish lost moisture, promote skin metabolism and nutrient absorption, and repair damaged skin, nourishing it and improving roughness.


2. Medium-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is the closest molecule to human cells, so it's typically injected into tear troughs, lips, and areas with prominent wrinkles. It's also suitable for filling the apples of the cheeks and temples. Injection must reach deep tissue; it shouldn't be used to fill the surface of the skin.


3. Large-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid forms a breathable film on the skin's surface, blocking the invasion of harmful substances and protecting the skin from damage. It has excellent coagulation properties and doesn't spread after injection. It's primarily used for cosmetic procedures like breast and buttock augmentation, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentation. It can also be used for wrinkle removal and body shaping, filling deep tissue.


monophasic and biphasic hyaluronic acid:

The main differences between monophasic and biphasic hyaluronic acid lie in their texture, function, and application.

Texture: Monophasic hyaluronic acid is a smooth, homogeneous, evenly cross-linked gel, similar to jelly; biphasic hyaluronic acid is a mixture of cross-linked particles and a non-cross-linked liquid.


Functional Differences: Monophasic hyaluronic acid offers superior support, resists diffusion and displacement, undergoes uniform metabolism, allows for easy injection, and provides long-lasting shaping. It also has a high viscosity and can be used for lifting. Generally, a higher degree of cross-linking increases shaping power. Biphasic hyaluronic acid has a higher elasticity, better ductility, and is easier to spread. However, it has a faster initial metabolism, resulting in a grainy feel. Its viscosity and elasticity are superior, but its shaping power is weaker.


Application Differences: Monophasic hyaluronic acid is suitable for body shaping, rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, and deep wrinkle filling. Biphasic hyaluronic acid is suitable for filling shallow wrinkles and augmenting cheeks.
